The recession did not stop construction work in Summerland in 2009, according to building permit statistics.
There were 129 permits issued over the year, with a total value of $14,415,313. This is down slightly from 2008 when 149 permits, with a value of $16,346,383 were issued. Residential permits included 25 single family buildings, 37 residential additions and accesses, 24 garages and carports, seven swimming pools and 15 residential renovations. Permits were also issued for two farm and agriculture buildings, one new commercial building, two new industrial buildings, 11 commercial additions and alterations and two industrial additions and alterations. Two engineered building permits were also issued. Construction activity in Summerland was low in 2003, but increased steadily from 2004 to 2007, with drops seen in 2008 and 2009.
